Surveying & Planning More about Surveying & Planning

The next time you head out, observe your urban surroundings and examine how the land around you has been developed for specific intents - for example, residential quarters, commercial zoning, transport routes and the airport. The purposeful planning, construction and maintenance of these infrastructure is central to the field of surveying and planning.

Planning and development surveyors identify opportunities for the development in a strategic and sustainable way. They often ask questions such as “how should this plot of land be used, and what impact will development of a certain kind have?” Quantity Surveyors on the other hand ensures that developments are completed on time and within budget.

As planning and construction are typically massive projects, planners and surveyors often find themselves working with engineers, economists, lawyers, architects, interest and community groups, and politicians. This ensures that all human, environmental, economic, legal, political and aesthetic factors in the planning and construction are taken into account.

As an undergraduate of Planning and Surveying, you will take modules such as landscape planning and heritage, planning for sustainable development, strategic development, planning law and development processes. The course will also include hands-on studio and fieldwork components.

If you have a passion for social, economic, environmental issues, have a keen eye for aesthetics, are creative and imaginative and enjoy working with people in an interdisciplinary fashion, you might like to explore pursuing a degree in Plannind and Surveying.
