More about Geography
With all the natural calamities like earthquake and hurricanes occurring around us, there is a growing need to study the causes and perhaps predict future occurrences of such phenomenon. Earth Science studies the atmosphere, hydrosphere, oceans and biosphere, as well as the solid earth.
Earth Science uses tools from physics, chemistry, biology, chronology and mathematics to build a quantitative understanding of how the Earth system works, and how it evolved to its current state. You will study things like how the mantle lies beneath the earth’s crust and is heated by the radioactive decay of heavy elements to form magma. The Magma is in a state of semi-perpetual convection that causes the lithospheric plates to move slowly. The resulting process is known as plate tectonics – the cause of earthquakes.
Earth Science also lets you examine the earth’s past by looking within the rocks and landscape. These natural “time capsules” lock in information on the state of the earth millions of years ago. Along with fossils of plants and animals, they tell us how they lived or how they became extinct.
Environmental Science will let us understand how our planet works and formulate plans to properly manage our environment and if we are to predict how the environment will change in the future.
