Our BA History of Art with a Year Abroad offers four distinctive years of study in art and architectural history. The programme begins with a foundational year introducing art history and an optional language, followed by a year abroad at one of our prestigious partner institutions in Europe, the USA, or China, where you immerse yourself in local language, culture, art, and architecture. At York, you receive comprehensive training in art history, exploring diverse regions—including Europe, the Americas, Middle East, North Africa, and East, South, and Southeast Asia—and periods from late antiquity to the contemporary. This traditional humanities discipline builds transferable vocational skills through partnerships with the Tate, National Gallery, V&A, and York Museums Trust, as well as country houses, maritime museums, and churches. Our interdisciplinary approach fosters links with other departments in the Faculties of Arts and Humanities and Social Sciences, enriching teaching and research.
