About the course

If you are passionate about understanding the universe and mathematics, our mathematics and physics programmes—offered as BSc, MMath, or MPhys—provide an ideal blend, deepening your knowledge of mathematics and its application to physics problems. These courses highlight unique features, including award-winning professional training placements. For instance, BSc students can undertake paid placements in research labs or companies for practical experience, while MMath or MPhys students may join Year 4 research placements in world-leading groups. Additionally, we emphasize undergraduate research through paid summer opportunities, in-house grants for projects, conferences, or innovation, and partnerships via the South East Physics Network. In these programmes, you will explore core topics such as linear algebra, quantum physics, differential equations, and particle physics, alongside optional modules like fluid dynamics, nuclear astrophysics, Galois theory, and general relativity. Tailor your studies with an extended project, culminating in a supervised research project that could lead to peer-reviewed publication. Hands-on learning occurs in our refurbished £2.7m radiation laboratories, where you conduct experiments related to nuclear and particle physics. Choose between BSc or integrated masters (MMath/MPhys), with the latter including advanced research in your final year. For full module details, visit our website.
