About the course

Choosing the BA English Literature and Creative Writing degree at Surrey offers intellectually stimulating teaching from acclaimed writers, scholars, and enthusiastic educators who deliver ideas, techniques, and methodologies with accessibility and passion. As part of a vibrant community of literary scholars, writers, and practitioners, students explore the opportunities and challenges of critical and creative expression. With a focus on employability, the program includes award-winning Professional Training placements to boost career readiness. Graduates acquire transferable skills in communication, writing, and critical thinking, enabling professional-level output in analytical commentary, literary criticism, prose fiction, poetry, and writing for stage, screen, gaming, and more—essential for careers in writing, editing, teaching, publishing, marketing, journalism, and communications. The curriculum examines influential literary works, from classics like Shakespeare and George Eliot to contemporary voices such as Kazuo Ishiguro, Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie, and Jhumpa Lahiri, across genres including science-fiction, travel writing, medieval and romantic literature, and global contemporary texts. Students engage with canonical and experimental forms, historically marginalized perspectives, and innovative modules like Science-Fiction, Renaissance Lives, poetry, and identities, alongside period-based studies from Medieval to Contemporary. Creative writing modules hone skills in novels, short stories, plays, screenplays, graphic novels, and game writing, while fostering appreciation for diverse cultures, digital storytelling, video-gaming, blogging, and podcasting to inspire original work.
