Discover photonics – the science of light – and apply your physics knowledge to the next generation of technologies. From the optical fibres that underpin today’s global internet to new medical treatments, photonics has transformed our lives. With the application of optical techniques set to increase and a shortage of qualified people to employ, photonics is a great field to study. You’ll be taught by staff at the top of their field – some of whom are based in our Optoelectronics Research Centre, one of the world’s leading institutes for photonics research. At Southampton we have a long heritage of discovery and a concentration of expertise in photonics. You’ll also benefit from extensive, state-of-the-art laser laboratories, and learn how to use industry-standard equipment to make optical measurements. When you graduate you’ll be in a great position to take an industry research and development role, where your knowledge of lasers, optical components and nanofabrication techniques will be in great demand. You’ll also be well equipped for further research at PhD level. Many of our Physics with Photonics students continue their studies within Southampton’s prestigious Optoelectronics Research Centre (ORC) before going on to successful industry careers.Physics at Southampton is ranked 3rd in the UK for graduate career prospects in the Guardian University Guide 2022.This course is accredited by the Institute of Physics.
