This programme will give you complete proficiency in a major international language. French is native to France, Belgium, Switzerland, Canada and the French Caribbean, and it’s an official language in much of Africa and Asia. The programme provides you with an overarching learning environment solidly rooted in key disciplinary contexts such as politics, socio-historical studies, ethnography and cultural studies, which are all central to the understanding of other societies and culture. You’ll become familiar with the scholarly discourse and debates about languages and cultures in a comparative context and be able to engage in expression, discussion and research in these subjects. The flexible curriculum enables you to balance your choice of modules according to your own interests, while also ensuring that you graduate with skills essential to a successful career or further study. The Centre for Language Study at Southampton has everything you need. You'll be immersed in international experiences, and get to know foreign cultures first hand by spending a year abroad, either as a student at a partner university or in a work placement. Our digital humanities facilities will allow you to study and research through cutting-edge technology, such as virtual reality, 3D scanners and printers, and a 360 degree fully immersive audio-visual centre.
