Combining French with German gives you the opportunity of studying two neighbouring European cultures and their hugely important languages. By studying linguistics alongside your languages, you’ll have the opportunity to explore a broad range of subfields from the ‘nuts and bolts' of language (such as the articulations of the mouth involved in speech, and the principles underlying the structure of sentences), to how its properties are acquired; from how language varies according to its speakers. The programme will provide you with an overarching learning environment solidly rooted in key disciplinary contexts such as politics, socio-historical studies, ethnography and cultural studies which are all central to the understanding of other societies and culture. The flexible curriculum enables you to balance your choice of modules according to your own interests. The Centre for Language Study at Southampton has everything you need.You'll be immersed in international experiences, and get to know foreign cultures first hand by spending a year abroad, either as a student at a partner university or in a work placement. Our digital humanities facilities will allow you to study and research through cutting-edge technology, such as virtual reality, 3D scanners and printers, and a 360 degree fully immersive audio-visual centre.
