About the course

Medical Engineering seeks to solve the medical issues of tomorrow by combining biology, medicine and healthcare with engineering to create next-generation technologies for healthcare and wellbeing. Our Medical Engineering course takes a patient-centred approach and follows a pathway of general and mechanical engineering. Specialist modules provide insight into medical engineering fundamentals and practice. As a Medical Engineering student at Southampton, you’ll learn the underlying principles of medical technologies and gain the ability to design, develop and deliver new products. You will work on projects, examples and case-studies from medical and healthcare applications of engineering.During the first two years of this course you will study an introduction to Medical Engineering and engineering principles, as well as specialist modules from human biology to mechanics, to engineering law and management. The third year will allow you to specialise further with a range of exciting optional modules and an individual project. In the third year you will also be able to choose modules from our Biomedical Engineering course, giving you the ability to build a unique set of Biomedical Engineering skills. The University of Southampton has a long tradition of interdisciplinary research and teaching at the interface between engineering and healthcare.
