About the course

This integrated Master's degree in Mechanical Engineering combines theoretical principles with practical design work. The first two years establish foundational knowledge in mechanical engineering, including law, management, systems design, modelling, and computing, to guide products from concept to market. In the third year, students advance their mathematics and materials expertise for sustainable manufacturing solutions and complete an individual project. The fourth year features advanced modules and a group design project addressing real-world challenges, with access to state-of-the-art facilities such as the UK's largest wind tunnel, a high-resolution 3D imaging centre, and dedicated design studios.Assessment involves a mix of online and in-person exams, coursework including problem-solving, laboratory reports, design exercises, essays, and individual/group projects. The course is fully accredited by the Institution of Mechanical Engineers, providing a pathway to chartered status.

What you will learn

Typical modules include: Year one: An Introduction to Engineering Design; Electrical and Electronics Systems; Mathematics for Engineering and the Environment; Mechanical Systems Analysis; Mechanics, Structures and Materials; ThermoFluids. Year two: Electronics and Control; Engineering Management and Law; Fluid Mechanics; Materials and Structures; Mathematics for Engineering and the Environment Part II; Mechanics, Machines and Vibration; Systems Design and Computing; Thermodynamics. Year three: Individual Project; Engineering Design with Management; Accounting and Finance for Engineers; Finite Element Analysis in Solid Mechanics; Heat Transfer and Applications; Manufacturing and Materials; plus additional module options. Year four: Group design project; Composite Engineering Design and Mechanics; Materials, Manufacturing and Supply Chain Management; Strategic Management; plus module options to deepen your knowledge. During your industrial placement year you will spend this extra time at an engineering firm, applying the skills and knowledge you've learned so far.
