About the course

Mathematicians are highly sought after in industries such as finance, science, and the arts, where their analytical and problem-solving skills address diverse challenges. This flexible BSc Mathematics degree enhances employability by covering core areas including pure and applied mathematics, statistics, and operational research. Students can incorporate options from other disciplines like economics, sciences, or languages, while building foundations in algebra, calculus, number theory, and statistics. They will develop skills in problem-solving, logical reasoning, and the use of tools like Python and R, with opportunities to specialize in areas such as actuarial mathematics or operational research. The programme allows students to broaden their studies by selecting modules outside mathematics, such as accountancy, philosophy, or music, through the Curriculum Innovation Programme. Teaching combines lectures and workshops led by experts in fields like group theory and experimental design, fostering a dedicated learning environment. Assessment includes coursework, tests, and exams to evaluate students' knowledge and abilities. For detailed modules, refer to the course page at https://www.southampton.ac.uk/courses/mathematical-sciences-degree-bsc#modules.

What you will learn

This is the most flexible degree programme we offer. In each of the three years, alongside the core and optional mathematics modules, you have the chance to broaden your interests by studying subjects from outside mathematics, such as accountancy, economics, physics, computing, philosophy, languages, music or English. You therefore have a chance to develop a range of mathematical and other skills that will serve you well in a very wide variety of careers. In addition, our Curriculum Innovation Programme offers our students the chance to take optional modules outside their core disciplines.
