About the course

This course, formerly known as MEng Ship Science, focuses on maritime engineering, encompassing the design, construction, and testing of vessels and offshore structures for transport, recreation, and marine resource utilization. It integrates theoretical principles of naval architecture and marine engineering with practical labs, design modules, and projects. The first two years are shared with the BEng program, building a strong foundation in marine vehicles, structures, and design. Students can then opt for one of six specialist pathways—such as Advanced Computational Engineering or Yacht and High Performance Craft—or pursue a broad-based degree. In years three and four, students advance their knowledge through specialized modules, individual and group projects, and real-world problem-solving. Assessment includes exams, coursework, lab reports, essays, and presentations. The program provides access to facilities like towing tanks and workshops, and is accredited by the Royal Institution of Naval Architects, Institution of Marine Engineering, Science and Technology, and Institution of Mechanical Engineers, offering a pathway to chartered status.
