About the course

This four-year integrated Master’s in Marine Biology with Oceanography, accredited by the Institute of Marine Engineering, Science and Technology (IMarEST), explores marine biology’s interconnections with broader marine sciences. Students develop intellectual, practical, and fieldwork skills in collecting, analysing, and interpreting marine biological and oceanographic data. Based at the National Oceanography Centre Southampton (NOCS), a leading global centre for ocean and Earth science research, participants engage in hands-on fieldwork on research vessels and complete an original research project in their final year. Opportunities for study and field research extend across the UK and abroad, within a program ranked 8th in the UK and 39th globally (QS World Rankings, Earth and Marine Science, 2023). Graduates, with 98% in employment or further study within 15 months (Graduate Outcomes 2020/2021), are well-prepared for diverse careers. The curriculum offers a range of modules, such as Physics of the Ocean, Introduction to Marine Ecology and Evolution, and Data Literacy and Analysis, allowing students to tailor their studies. Learning involves lectures, tutorials, coursework, and independent projects, with assessments including essays, laboratory reports, oral presentations, and exams. This approach ensures graduates acquire versatile skills recognised by professional bodies.
