About the course

This four-year MEng in Electronic Engineering with Photonics degree specialises in the design and fabrication of optical fibres, as well as semiconductor light sources and detectors and will give you greater understanding of the practical industrial applications of photonics. The programme includes specialist modules from the University's Optoelectronics Research Centre, one of the world's leading institutes for photonics research. Key areas of study include optical communications, fabrication and microscopy, nanoelectronic and quantum devices, photonic materials including silicon photonics, metamaterials, nanophonics and plasmonics, digital coding and transmission. In your third and fourth years you will also participate in a group project that will aim to solve a real industry problem. This project will test and further develop your technical skills but also will develop your management skills as you will work in a team that needs to deliver a solution to a real engineering problem. Electrical and Electronic Engineering at Southampton are Ranked number 1 in the UK (Guardian University Guide 2021). You’ll study in facilities with an unrivalled reputation. We have recently invested £8m in our teaching labs. We also have a £100m state-of-the-art interdisciplinary clean room complex and high-voltage laboratory. You’ll be prepared to work in a wide variety of areas and fields; we have strong relationships with employers, and our graduates are particularly in demand for their understanding of organisations and their practical abilities in the workplace. We have our own Careers Hub website, run an annual careers fair and have a dedicated startup incubator, Future Worlds, to support student enterprise. Our MEng Electrical and Electronic Engineering degrees are accredited by the Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET), and we are members of the UK Electronics Skills Foundation (UK-ESF) and IET Power Academy.
