There is a growing demand for chemical engineers skilled in designing sustainable technologies and processes. This three-year BEng degree equips students with essential expertise in sustainable chemical engineering, focusing on environmental improvements, with an optional Industrial Placement Year. Ranked fourth in the UK by the 2024 Complete University Guide, the program offers access to state-of-the-art facilities, including chemical engineering laboratories, a dedicated computer suite, and a virtual control room for simulating real chemical plants. Students study across Engineering and Chemistry schools, gaining the ability to address chemical challenges with innovative, sustainable designs, and participate in embedded design projects, culminating in a third-year group project that integrates theoretical knowledge and practical skills. The curriculum progresses as follows: Year 1 covers foundational principles in chemical engineering, engineering, and chemistry, including design, mechanics, and thermofluids. Year 2 delves into core topics like process control, reaction engineering, and heat and mass transfer. Year 3 explores advanced modules such as advanced reaction engineering and includes the group design project, while Year 4 involves an individual research project, commercialisation of chemistry, and optional modules in areas like bioenergy and wastewater treatment. Assessment combines unseen written examinations with coursework, including problem-solving exercises, laboratory reports, essays, and individual or group projects, evaluated through reports, presentations, and oral examinations.
Year 1: Study the principles of chemical engineering, as well as modules in engineering and chemistry covering topics such as design, mechanics, and thermofluids. Year 2: Deepen your knowledge of chemical engineering by studying core topics including process control, reaction engineering, and heat and mass transfer. Year 3: Study advanced chemical engineering modules such as advanced reaction engineering and complete your group design project. Year 4: Carry out an individual research project, learn about the commercialisation of chemistry and choose optional modules in areas such as bioenergy, and wastewater treatment.
