About the course

Demand for chemical engineers skilled in designing sustainable technologies and processes is on the rise. This three-year BEng degree equips students with essential skills in sustainable chemical engineering to enhance environmental outcomes. Students may opt for an additional Industrial Placement Year. Ranked 4th in the UK by the 2024 Complete University Guide, the program offers access to state-of-the-art facilities, including chemical engineering laboratories, a dedicated computer suite, and a virtual control room for simulating real plant operations. By integrating studies from the Schools of Engineering and Chemistry, students gain the ability to address chemical challenges with innovative, sustainable designs, utilizing refurbished laboratories and extensive engineering spaces. Design is a core element, culminating in a third-year group project that applies theoretical and practical knowledge to real-world solutions, preparing graduates for stable, rewarding careers in a lucrative sector. The curriculum progresses from foundational principles in Year 1—covering engineering, chemistry, design, mechanics, and thermofluids—to advanced topics in Years 2 and 3, such as process control, reaction engineering, heat and mass transfer, and specialized modules. Assessment combines unseen written exams with coursework, including problem-solving exercises, laboratory reports, design projects, essays, and oral presentations, evaluating experimental, research, and design skills.

What you will learn

Year 1: Study the principles of chemical engineering, as well as modules in engineering and chemistry covering topics such as design, mechanics, and thermofluids. Year 2: Deepen your knowledge of chemical engineering by studying core topics including process control, reaction engineering, and heat and mass transfer. Year 3: Study advanced chemical engineering modules such as advanced reaction engineering and complete your group design project.
