Our BA in Philosophy and English Literature equips students with advanced critical and analytical skills, enabling them to engage deeply with diverse philosophical and literary texts while mastering the art of clear, persuasive argumentation. In philosophy, students gain a comprehensive understanding of key principles, concepts, problems, texts, and figures, guided by renowned experts specialising in moral philosophy, the philosophy of mind and language, and non-Western traditions like Indian philosophy. The first year focuses on foundational skills, with options for interdisciplinary modules, while subsequent years allow in-depth exploration of topics such as ethics, animals, crime, punishment, and religion. In English Literature, students study familiar authors and genres—from tragedy and Gothic works by Shakespeare and Dickens to modern voices like Plath and Beckett—while discovering new areas like children’s literature, publishing studies, and the history of the book. Our academics conduct research spanning medieval poetry to contemporary American fiction, and 94% of students rated teaching staff as good or very good at explaining concepts (National Student Survey, 2023).
