About the course

This BA in Philosophy and Classical Studies at the University of Reading invites students to explore core concepts of truth, reality, ethics, and the civilisations of ancient Greece and Rome, drawing on our distinctive antiquities collection. The programme develops critical thinking, logical analysis, and argumentation skills through in-depth study of philosophical principles, texts, and figures, with expertise in moral philosophy, mind, and language. Small class sizes in both departments ensure personalised attention. In Classical Studies, students examine ancient literature, history, and culture, tracing their influence on modern society via translated texts, themes in poetry and tragedy, and modules in Latin, Greek, or media like films. Placements offer practical application of skills, while core modules include Reason and Argument, Great Works in Philosophy, and Greek History. Note that modules are subject to approval and may change; visit the programme page for updates.
