About the course

On the BEng Biomedical Engineering with Professional Experience programme, students collaborate with expert academics to build transferable skills and address disease diagnosis, prevention, and treatment in a rapidly evolving field. This four-year degree incorporates a year-long professional placement between the second and final years, alongside practical lab sessions that develop skills in techniques like immuno-fluorescent labelling, microscopy, DNA and protein analysis, EEG recordings, cell culture, aseptic methods, and analytical tools. In the 2023 National Student Survey, 93% of students in the department rated teaching staff as good or very good at explaining concepts. At the University of Reading, renowned research in neural engineering, rehabilitation, and medical technology offers opportunities for original projects in these areas during the final year. Sample modules include Anatomy and Physiology, Cellular and Molecular Principles of Life, Biomedical Sensors and Wearable Technology, Robotics in Medicine and Prosthetics, Biomechanics and Soft Technologies, and Brain-Computer Interfaces and Assistive Technology. Note that modules are subject to approval and availability; check the course page for updates.
