About the course

Physical Geography and Geology explores how Earth's surface is shaped by natural and human processes, providing essential knowledge to tackle sustainability challenges. Core modules cover seismic, landscape, and volcanic geohazards, clean energy transitions, long-term environmental change, climate, environments, and the biosphere, addressing risks from natural hazards, cleaner energy, and climate mitigation.Students gain specialist academic, fieldwork, and laboratory skills for diverse careers, supported by approachable staff sharing cutting-edge research through lectures, tutorials, practicals, and field courses. Highlights include extensive local and international fieldwork (e.g., Death Valley, Italy, Sicily), optional second-year study abroad (Europe, Canada, Australia, USA), placement years, personal tutoring, PALS mentoring, open-access LABplus facilities, and free field safety equipment. Accredited by the Geological Society for Chartered Geologist status, the program boasts strong 2022 NSS results (90% praised staff explanations; 86% found teaching engaging) and is located near the sea, Dartmoor, and two UNESCO geological sites in a diverse, respectful community.
