About the course

This course explores how technology is reshaping the music industry, guided by experts from the world-leading Interdisciplinary Centre for Computer Music Research. Students develop expertise in audio engineering with cutting-edge tools, acquire hands-on software development skills to create custom applications, and prepare for diverse careers in music and technology. Accredited by JAMES (representing APRS, MPG, and associates), it includes collaboration with musicians, industry masterclasses, and opportunities to address social issues. Graduates build a strong portfolio, with options to progress to postgraduate studies. The program spans three years: Year 1 focuses on foundational skills in music technology and audio; Year 2 advances to developing custom tools and industry projects; and the final year allows personalized projects in AI, machine learning, and signal processing. An optional placement year provides practical experience. Assessment details are available on our website, and the course does not award Qualified Teacher Status.

What you will learn

Year 1: Encounter modern music technology and develop the fundamental technical skills required to work effectively and creatively with music and audio in the digital and acoustic domains. Year 2: Transition from using existing audio and music technologies to learning how to develop and deploy your own. Engage with industry briefs and work as technical experts with musicians in the recording studio. Build your own digital instruments and software applications, and learn how to make hardware and software interfaces. Placement year (optional): Gain valuable on-the-job experience through our optional placement year. We support you in your second year in deciding whether to take this opportunity, and assist you in finding a placement and being prepared for it. The placement could be in any appropriate external setting. Final Year: Follow your passion: you will plan and develop a project that explores an area of computing, audio, and music technology that you choose. Practice advanced skills in artificial intelligence, machine learning, audio signal processing, assistive music technology, and create devices that can change and enrich lives.
