About the course

The four-year MEng in Product Design and Manufacture integrates creativity with engineering principles, providing an extra year for advanced skill development through in-depth projects and studies in materials, manufacturing, and human factors. This program fosters exceptional work, resulting in graduates with impressive portfolios highly sought after by employers. In a world of challenges from everyday inconveniences to global issues like climate change, product designers leverage creative, engineering, and manufacturing skills to deliver viable solutions. The course employs modern technologies, such as digital sketching, 3D printing, and virtual reality, alongside broad modules in manufacturing, materials, ergonomics, and marketing. Key project work spans sectors like medical and automotive, emphasizing realistic design, mass manufacturability, and commercial factors. Delivered by industry-experienced academics and professionals, the curriculum starts with a foundational engineering base in the first year, progressing to deeper skills and major projects in subsequent years.

What you will learn

The first year shares many modules with the department's other engineering degrees and will therefore give you a broad foundation in engineering science and design, manufacturing processes, material selection and behaviour, mathematics and business studies. You will develop further design skills and commercial awareness in year two. You continue to develop design skills through project work and the modules studied become more in-depth. This includes a major design project undertaken in the final semester along with a dissertation.
