About the course

Our three-year BEng in Product Design and Manufacture integrates creativity with engineering principles, equipping students with essential skills for design-oriented careers. In a world filled with challenges from minor inconveniences to global issues like climate change, product designers apply diverse creative, engineering, and manufacturing expertise to develop viable solutions. The programme leverages advanced technologies, including digital sketching, 3D printing, rapid prototyping, and virtual reality, to prepare graduates for contemporary design demands. Students explore modules covering manufacturing, materials, ergonomics, marketing, and more, while engaging in practical projects across sectors such as medical, automotive, and electronics.Project-based learning emphasises realistic design approaches, incorporating manufacturing and engineering knowledge to create products suitable for mass production and commercial viability. Delivered by industry-experienced academics and practising designers, the course remains aligned with employer needs. The first year builds a foundation in engineering science, design, materials, and business, while the second year deepens skills through advanced modules and major projects, including a dissertation.

What you will learn

The first year shares many modules with the department's other engineering degrees and will therefore give you a broad foundation in engineering science and design, manufacturing processes, material selection and behaviour, mathematics and business studies. You will develop further design skills and commercial awareness in year two. You continue to develop design skills through project work and the modules studied become more in-depth. This includes a major design project undertaken in the final semester along with a dissertation.
