Our three-year BEng in Product Design and Manufacture integrates creativity with engineering principles, equipping students with essential skills for design-oriented careers. In a world facing diverse challenges, from everyday inconveniences to global issues like climate change, product designers apply creative, engineering, and manufacturing expertise to develop commercially viable solutions. The course leverages advanced technologies, including digital sketching, 3D printing, rapid prototyping, and virtual reality, to prepare graduates for modern industry demands.Students explore a wide range of modules covering manufacturing, materials, ergonomics, marketing, and more, while engaging in project-based learning across sectors such as medical, automotive, and electronics. These projects emphasize realistic design approaches, incorporating engineering knowledge to create products suitable for mass production and commercial factors. Delivered by academics with industrial experience and active product designers, the curriculum ensures relevance to current employer needs. In the first year, students build foundational engineering knowledge; the second year advances design skills through group projects; and the third year culminates in a major design project and dissertation.
You will share the same first year across the department - developing knowledge of the engineering fundamentals, science and design. In the second year, you will develop your design skills and commercial awareness further while working on a group design project. In the third year you will undertake a major design project along with a dissertation.
