About the course

This course empowers students to advance engineering solutions for greater sustainability and efficiency, leveraging initiative, numeracy, and specialized knowledge to enhance modern industries. Mechanical engineering is integral to sectors like aerospace, manufacturing, medicine, renewable energy, and motorsports, influencing everyday life through innovations in transportation and food processing. Participants gain access to advanced facilities, including robotics and 3D printing, and apply skills through individual and group projects. The program shares a common foundation with manufacturing engineering for the first two years, focusing on engineering science and design fundamentals. In the third year, students specialize in mechanical engineering options, with the degree available as a BEng or MEng, allowing potential transfer to the MEng based on performance.Modules cover core topics such as thermodynamics, fluid mechanics, solid mechanics, dynamics, and electro-mechanical systems, emphasizing hands-on design projects. Students undertake design, make, and test activities in well-equipped workshops, with opportunities to switch to the four-year MEng after the second year by meeting assessment criteria. Third-year flexibility includes optional modules tailored to personal interests and career aspirations, ending with an individual project addressing real-world challenges.

What you will learn

You will share the same first year across the department - developing knowledge of the engineering fundamentals, science and design. The science subjects studied include thermodynamics, fluid mechanics, solid mechanics, dynamics and electro-mechanical systems. In design, the emphasis is on project work and in both the first and second years, you will undertake a design, make and test project, which you will manufacture in the department's well-equipped student workshop. At the end of the second year, you can remain on the BEng course or opt to switch to the four-year MEng degree provided you achieve at least 55% in the end of year assessment. Course flexibility opens up in year three with a long list of optional modules to help you tailor your degree to your own specific interests and career aspirations. All students undertake an individual project in their final year, many of which are based on real industry-relevant problems or challenges.
