About the course

If you are intrigued by abstract ideas like infinity and symmetry, and seek to enhance your problem-solving and analytical abilities, this BSc in Mathematics will ignite your enthusiasm while offering practical industry experience. The programme develops transferable skills through project work, group studies, and presentations, which you will apply during a dedicated year in industry. It features specialised modules across various mathematical branches, informed by our academics' research in areas such as medicine, biotechnology, food security, epidemic modelling, fluid mechanics for industry and biology, statistical machine learning, algebra, number theory, and mathematical finance. The course begins with a common first-year curriculum focusing on core modules in algebra, probability, statistics, and foundational concepts in pure and applied mathematics. In the second year, you can select optional modules to specialise further. The third year involves an industrial placement with tutor support, followed by a final year offering extensive choices in topics like cryptography, quantum theory, finance, or fluid dynamics, culminating in a research project to build career-relevant skills. For detailed module information, please refer to the university website.

What you will learn

All students follow a common programme of study for the first year. You will focus on core modules that provide a solid foundation in the main mathematical topics. You'll build on your existing knowledge in areas such as algebra, probability and statistics. There will also be an introduction to key mathematical concepts in pure and applied mathematics. During the second year, alongside core modules, you will start to specialise by choosing from a range of optional modules. You will spend the third year on an industrial placement. You'll be allocated a placement tutor who will keep in touch and check on your progress throughout the year out. The final year provides you with even more freedom to choose optional modules in the areas that interest you. From cryptography to quantum theory, or finance to fluid dynamics, you'll have multiple options to choose from. You will do a project module providing you with an introduction to mathematical research and learning skills that may be useful for your future career. Please visit the university webpage for full details of the modules available.
