About the course

In today's complex world, addressing global challenges requires diverse knowledge and advanced problem-solving skills. The Liberal Arts programme at Nottingham empowers students to study multiple subjects across 18 areas, including English, humanities, culture, languages, social sciences, politics, maths, and enterprise. With no fixed pathways, students can customise their degree with guidance from a dedicated team, fostering innovative solutions to issues like migration, globalisation, and sustainability through core modules that integrate subjects and promote collaboration.Students join a vibrant Liberal Arts community, engaging in group projects, field trips, and societies while accessing university-wide opportunities. The programme structure includes two mandatory modules in the first year, with at least two optional modules in subsequent years. Personalised support helps select modules, though restrictions may apply due to timetables or prerequisites. Successful completion of language modules can enable a year abroad, followed by a final year at Nottingham.

What you will learn

Year one - you will take two mandatory Liberal Arts modules Year two - choose at least two from four optional Liberal Arts modules Final year - choose at least two from four optional Liberal Arts modules You have such an extensive choice of subject modules that it is impossible to show them all on the prospectus. However, our individual approach means the Liberal Arts team will work with you personally to help you select the modules that meet your interests and ambitions across your whole degree. We'll start looking at options with you from when your results come out and your place is confirmed, in your first week at Nottingham and regularly every year throughout your degree. And if you have any questions at any point about modules available and selection you can always ask us. Due to timetable clashes there are restrictions on some module combinations. Some modules require you to have an existing qualification (for example, music performance). Some modules may require you to have studied other modules first (for example an interpreting module may require you to have completed a language module beforehand). If you successfully complete Modern Language and Cultures language modules in years one and two you may be able to spend your third year abroad. This will be in a country where the language you've studied is the main one. You will then return and complete a fourth year in Nottingham where the usual Liberal Arts year three structure will apply.
