About the course

Contemporary political ideas and practices are profoundly shaped by modern history, as seen in the enduring influence of the American and French Revolutions on the institutions and cultures of today's America and France. Politics and history serve as complementary fields, both examining the dynamics of power over time and providing critical insights into the contemporary world. They employ diverse research and analytical methods, fostering opportunities for varied careers. Students will engage with primary and secondary sources to research, write, and debate historical topics, while also developing skills to compare and contrast political systems, institutions, and behaviors. The second-year module, "History and Politics: A Problem or Solution?", is tailored for this program, addressing intersections and conflicts between the disciplines to prepare for advanced studies, complemented by optional modules spanning broad chronological and geographical scopes. In each year, students undertake 120 credits of modules. Year one includes 60 credits of core politics modules focusing on post-war and contemporary British political crises, alongside 20 credits of core history modules introducing disciplinary skills and methodologies, plus 40 credits of optional history modules. Year two features the integrated "History and Politics: A Problem or Solution?" module, with the remaining credits drawn from optional politics and history offerings. In the final year, students select from two pathways, specializing in either history or politics while maintaining a balanced curriculum.
