About the course

Over 275 million people speak French across five continents, making it the official language of 29 countries. If you're eager to explore the vibrant history, politics, and culture of France and the Francophone world, French and Francophone Studies at Nottingham provides an in-depth opportunity. As one of the UK's largest French departments with expert lecturers, the program offers modules in translation and linguistics, art and theatre, cinema history and cultural politics, and literature from the Francophone world. A year abroad in year three allows you to immerse in French life, enhancing communication skills and employability through options like teaching English, working, or studying at partner universities.Subject options include French Studies and French with Dutch. In year one, you'll build a strong foundation in French language structures, reading texts, contemporary France, history, and linguistics through core modules. Year two advances your language proficiency and knowledge of Francophone cultures. Year three is spent abroad in a French-speaking country for studies, teaching, or work. In year four, refine your language expertise in complex contexts, select from diverse optional modules, and possibly complete a dissertation.

What you will learn

In year one you will receive a firm grounding in the structures of French through the core language module and pursue introductory studies in reading French texts, contemporary France, French history and linguistics. You will take compulsory core modules introducing you to French language and culture. You will take your remaining credits studying optional modules relating to your degree course. In year two you will develop your language skills to prepare you for the year abroad. You will study a choice of modules aimed at developing your knowledge of France and Francophone countries and culture. Your third academic year is spent in France or a Francophone country either on a programme of studies in a higher education institution, working as an assistant in a school or on a work placement. In year four you will perfect your command of the French language and its use in increasingly sophisticated contexts and study optional modules drawn from a list covering a wide range of topics in the fields mentioned in the course description. You also have the option to do a dissertation.
