This degree explores how screen media entertains, informs, and connects audiences, equipping students with insights into its economic, cultural, and technological dimensions. You will examine screen industries as economic sectors, global operations, evolving audiences, societal reflections, creative decision-making, and the influence of new technologies. As the course progresses, students specialise in areas aligned with their interests, blending theory with practical activities like developing movie pitches, filming shorts, and conducting audience surveys. Industry guests provide real-world perspectives on creative careers. The curriculum includes core modules on screen industry evolution, critical analysis, and global media flows in the first year, followed by theoretical approaches and projects in the second. The final year features an independent research project, with optional modules on topics like screen franchises and media distribution. Opportunities for study abroad, language credits, and internships in the US and UK enhance the experience, fostering a diverse, international outlook.
In year one, you will take core modules in the evolution of the screen industries, methods for critical debate and analysis of media, global media and cultural flows, media institutions and practices and undertake the first in a series of studio project modules. Year two develops your understanding of key critical and theoretical approaches in the study of perceptions of media experiences, development of media technologies and a further group project. In your final year, you will device and complete an independent research project of your own choosing, with an appropriate supervisor. Across all three years you will be able to choose from a range of optional modules including topics such as screen franchises, emotions, affect and the senses, distribution in the screen industries, censoring stories and protest, dissent and civil society.
