This course examines the interplay between humans and the environment, equipping students with essential skills to address environmental challenges and promote sustainability. Key issues include climate change, biodiversity loss, and pollution, requiring scientists to drive solutions. Students explore diverse subjects like geography and biology, with options to specialize, while engaging in fieldwork to develop practical expertise in areas such as environmental impact assessment, renewable energies, and pollution monitoring.Practical components emphasize hands-on skills in surveying and monitoring, including activities like bat surveys and habitat assessments. Taught by active researchers and supported by industry collaborations, the program offers study abroad opportunities, placements, and accreditation. Core modules cover climate impacts and ecosystems in the first year, advancing to climate science and optional topics in later years, culminating in an original research project.
Core modules in your first year introduce concepts of climate and the impact on the Earth's ecosystems. You'll look at environmental processes and major global systems. You will also consider environmental science and society. In year two you'll study the science behind climate change and influences on water chemistry. You'll identify key ecosystem drivers and processes, and explore how these have shaped the biosphere. Develop practical skills through the Ecological Surveying module. In the second year and third years, you have lots of optional modules. You can choose to study plant evolution and ecology in The Green Planet module. In your final year the research project enables you to use your skills to work on a piece of original research. This can be lab, field or literature based. You will design the study, collect and analyse data. Optional modules include Conservation, Palaeobiology and the Arctic Ecology Field Course.
