As populations expand, there is a pressing need to produce goods more intelligently, safely, and sustainably while safeguarding natural resources. Environmental engineers play a vital role in managing and reducing waste to curb pollution, focusing on protecting, restoring, and preserving the planet. They design processes and products that minimize impacts on air, land, and water, optimizing finite resources. Key areas include waste disposal, environmental compliance, flooding and drainage, infrastructure development, pollutant management, land recovery from activities like mining or farming, and water supply and sanitation. This course provides opportunities for a one-year paid industrial placement and/or study abroad. Accredited by the IChemE for BEng and IOM3 for MEng under the Engineering Council, it ensures alignment with UK professional standards. In years one and two, students build foundational knowledge in engineering, science, and design. Year three features advanced modules and an industry-focused group project, followed by optional placement. In year five, specialization options and a research project offer hands-on experience in innovative practices.
In year one and two, students develop knowledge of the engineering fundamentals, science and design. In year three in addition to advanced modules, you will undertake an industry-focused group design project, which simulates a commercial environment and will allow you to develop and demonstrate valuable skills for your future career as a professional environmental engineer. Following a successful placement application, you will spend a year working in industry at the end of year three. In year five, you will be able to specialise by choosing modules that suit your own interests and career path. You will also undertake a research and development project, giving you first-hand experience in cutting-edge research and advanced design practices.
