As populations expand, there is a pressing need to produce goods more intelligently, safely, and sustainably while safeguarding natural resources. Environmental engineers play a vital role in this effort by designing processes and products that reduce impacts on air, land, and water, optimizing finite resources. They focus on key areas such as waste disposal, environmental compliance to mitigate spills and emissions, flooding and drainage management, infrastructure development, pollutant control, land recovery from activities like mining or farming, and water supply with sanitation. This course fosters a commitment to planetary protection, offering options for a one-year paid industrial placement or study abroad, and is accredited by the IChemE for BEng and IOM3 for MEng standards, ensuring alignment with the UK Engineering Council's professional competence criteria.The program begins with a shared first year across the department, building foundational knowledge in engineering fundamentals, science, and design, with the flexibility to transfer to other courses afterward. In the third year, students engage in advanced modules and an industry-oriented group design project that simulates real-world scenarios, enhancing skills for a career in chemical engineering. The curriculum involves lectures, group work, tutorials, coursework, and self-study, typically exceeding 40 hours weekly.

You will share the same first year across the department - developing knowledge of the engineering fundamentals, science and design. At the end of year one you can elect to transfer to any of the courses offered by the department. In year three, in addition to advanced modules, you will undertake an industry-focused group design project, which simulates a commercial environment and will allow you to develop and demonstrate valuable skills for your future career as a professional chemical engineer. Through lectures, group study and tutorials combined with coursework and self-study, you may spend over 40 hours a week on your studies.
