About the course

If you are passionate about literature or curious about the evolution of language, this course offers an ideal opportunity to explore English literature across history. It examines the themes, principles, techniques, values, and cultural significance of key texts in their contexts, while also providing chances to enhance creative writing skills under the guidance of published poets and authors. With a wide array of optional modules—from Vikings to drama—you can pursue new interests, deepen existing ones, and customise your studies. Notably, the programme ranks in the top 20 for English in the UK according to The Times and Sunday Times Good University Guide 2024 and the Complete University Guide 2024.In the first year, students undertake five core modules, including coverage of English language, prose, poetry, and drama from the medieval era to today, plus an 'Academic Community' module for developing critical skills and exploring key issues. The second year builds deeper insights into literary and linguistic approaches, while the third year allows for a dissertation on a chosen topic, supported by faculty, alongside optional modules in literary, language, and performance studies.

What you will learn

In year one you will study five core modules. Four of these cover the areas of English language, prose, poetry and drama, from the medieval period to the present day. The fifth core module, 'Academic Community', enables you to explore key issues in English and develop important study skills. You will also choose one from a group of optional modules. Year two allows you to develop a deeper understanding of the issues and critical approaches across the areas of English literature and language. In year three, you have the opportunity to write a dissertation on a subject of your choosing, with the support of a member of academic staff. Your choices of optional modules come from the areas of literary studies, language studies, and drama and performance.
