Challenge conventional perceptions of English studies. At the University of Nottingham, our programme extends beyond a mere appreciation of literature, offering a wide array of optional modules spanning topics from Vikings to contemporary drama. This allows students to uncover new interests, deepen existing ones, and customise their degree. Beginning with foundational elements in applied linguistics, drama, and literature—from medieval times to the present—students explore human experiences through historical, cultural, and social lenses. Opportunities also exist to hone creative writing skills in fiction or poetry under the guidance of accomplished published authors and poets. Our curriculum includes core modules in the first year, covering English language, prose, poetry, and drama across historical periods, alongside 'Academic Community' for developing essential skills. In the second year, students advance their knowledge in preferred areas, while the third year involves selecting modules from at least three disciplines and completing a dissertation on a chosen topic in language, literature, performance, or a project-based focus.
