About the course

Electronic engineers design, develop, test, and supervise the production of technologies such as drones, electric vehicles, smartphones, navigation systems, and hospital equipment. This course fosters a comprehensive understanding of electronics through lab-based projects, individual and team collaborations, project management, and practical problem-solving. In your fourth year, you undertake an industry placement, remaining registered with the university and supported by regular tutor meetings. Graduates emerge confident in innovating and managing future electrical control systems. All electrical and electronic programs share the same content in the first two years, enabling specialization in year three, while the five-year MEng route provides deeper insights for Chartered Engineer status. In year one, students study a common curriculum including engineering mathematics, power and energy, and information systems. Year two emphasizes design skills through modules like electrical energy conditioning, electronic processing, communications, and practical solutions. Year three covers advanced mathematics, analogue electronics, integrated circuits, and optional topics. The fourth year focuses on industrial placement, and the final year involves an individual project exploring state-of-the-art technologies, often contributing to departmental research.

What you will learn

All students follow a common programme in year one and you will study topics such as engineering mathematics, power and energy and information and systems. In year two, you will develop your design skills through a variety of lab-based subjects. Modules include electrical energy conditioning and control, electronic processing and communications and practical engineering design solutions. Year three topics include advanced engineering mathematics, analogue electronics and integrated circuits and systems, as well as a range of optional modules. The industrial placement is completed in your fourth year. In your final year you will undertake an individual project and study state-of-the-the-art technologies. In many cases this project contributes to the major industrially related programmes undertaken by research groups within the department.
