The BA in Economics with Hispanic Studies is a four-year programme offered in collaboration with the Department of Modern Languages and Cultures. It covers key topics such as macroeconomics, microeconomics, mathematics, statistics, economic history, and behavioural economics. Students develop proficiency in Spanish, with options to include Portuguese, and can select from various elective modules. The third year involves studying in Spain, allowing practical application of language and economic skills, leading to enhanced employability upon graduation.Our graduates are in demand across sectors like investment banking, accountancy, and government. Notable alumni work at organisations such as Bank of America, Barclays, and the World Bank. In the first year, foundational economics and Spanish modules are covered. The second year deepens these areas, with two-thirds focused on economics. The third year includes study or placement in Granada, Spain, with instruction in Spanish. The final year at Nottingham features a dissertation, optional economics modules, and advanced language study.
In your first year you will cover the foundations of microeconomics and macroeconomics, and will choose between econometrics and quantitative economics, depending on your mathematical ability. You will also study a full-year Spanish module that will enhance your language skills. During your second year, you will build on your knowledge of microeconomics and macroeconomics and strengthen your knowledge of either econometric theory or applied econometrics.Two‑thirds of this year will focus on economics, and the remainder will develop your understanding of your chosen country as well as your language skills. You will spend your third year studying abroad and/or on a work placement in Granada, Spain. You will get the opportunity to broaden your horizons and enhance your employability by experiencing another culture. Teaching is in Spanish. For your final year you will return to Nottingham. Your economics studies will focus on a dissertation and some optional modules, while you refine your newly fluent language skills in a final language module and your choice from a list of optional modules.
