The BA Economics with German is a four-year degree offered in collaboration with the Department of Modern Languages and Cultures. It covers key subjects such as macroeconomics, microeconomics, mathematics, statistics, economic history, and behavioural economics, while developing proficiency in German through dedicated language modules. Students can tailor their studies with optional modules and spend their third year studying or on placement in Germany, such as in Göttingen, Mannheim, or Magdeburg, to apply skills in a real-world context. In the first year, students build foundations in economics and German language. The second year advances these areas, with two-thirds focused on economics. Returning for the final year, students complete a dissertation, select advanced modules, and refine language skills. Graduates are highly employable in sectors like investment banking, accountancy, and government, with alumni at organizations including Barclays, Deloitte, and the World Bank.
Your first year will see you cover the foundations of microeconomics and macroeconomics. You will also choose between econometrics and quantitative economics, depending on your mathematical ability. You'll also complete a full-year module to develop and build your use of the German language. During your second year, you will build on your knowledge of microeconomics and macroeconomics and strengthen your knowledge of either econometric theory or applied econometrics. Two‑thirds of this year will focus on economics, and the remainder will develop your understanding of Germany as well as your language skills. You will spend your third year studying abroad and/or on a work placement in Göttingen, Mannheim or Magdeburg in Germany. You will get the opportunity to broaden your horizons and enhance your employability by experiencing another culture. Teaching is typically in German. For your final year you will return to Nottingham. Your economics studies will focus on a dissertation and some optional modules, while you refine your newly fluent language skills in a final language module and your choice from a list of optional modules.
