About the course

Computer science encompasses problem-solving, creativity, and exploration of exciting fields like user experience design, virtual reality, artificial intelligence, and machine learning through a range of optional modules. In the second year, students engage in a collaborative group project, often with industry partners such as Capital One and IBM, to develop future computer systems, enhancing CV credentials. The program includes a paid industry placement in the third year, applying theoretical knowledge to real-world projects and potentially securing job offers prior to graduation.Inspired teaching from tutors featured in the Computerphile series at Nottingham supports this flexible degree, which requires no prior programming experience. Key advantages include the ability to transfer degrees in the first year, opportunities for international study, and strong graduate outcomes, with an average salary of £32,104 and accreditation from the British Computer Society. The curriculum covers foundational topics in programming languages like C, Java, and Haskell, alongside algorithms and databases, with advanced options in machine learning and robotics in the final year.

What you will learn

In year three, you will work on a placement with a real company in the industry. This will improve your employability and give you lots of valuable skills and experience. This can be in any area of computer science that you would like to pursue as a career. In the first year, you will learn the foundations of computer science. You will be introduced to programming languages such as C, Java and Haskell. We don't expect you to have programmed before so you don't need to worry if you have no experience. You will also be introduced to fundamentals in artificial intelligence, algorithms, and data bases. In year two you will complete a group project. This will be focused on software engineering where you will design and program a computer application. You'll also study core modules in areas such as operating systems, algorithm efficiency, and language and computation. Optional modules are also available for you to study topics that particularly interest you. Year four offers a wide range of flexibility. We offer lots of optional modules so you can choose what you study and tailor your degree to your own interests. These can be in the field of machine learning, advanced algorithms, mobile device programming, or autonomous robotic systems.
