Chemistry, MSci (Hons), with industry placement

Chemistry significantly influences society by addressing global challenges, such as developing new drugs and vaccines, advancing clean energy, and supporting food production. This course offers a unique opportunity in the third year to undertake a paid research placement in a leading chemical company's laboratory, where students work on projects, build industrial skills, and complete distance learning modules. Placement partners include AstraZeneca, Croda, GlaxoSmithKline, Lubrizol, and Sygnature. With 100% of graduates securing employment or further study within 15 months (HESA Graduate Outcomes, 2020-21), and the University of Nottingham highly targeted by employers, this programme equips students for diverse careers in pharmaceuticals, petrochemicals, and beyond, fostering skills in problem-solving, communication, and data analysis.The curriculum covers core areas like organic, inorganic, and physical chemistry, allowing customization through optional modules, such as medicinal chemistry for drug design. Taught by expert staff, including those from the Periodic Videos channel, the course is accredited by the Royal Society of Chemistry and features modern facilities, small-group tutorials, and flexibility for transfers. In the first two years, students build foundational knowledge; the third involves industry research; and the fourth focuses on an in-depth project, preparing graduates for postgraduate studies or professional roles.

In your first year, you will build up your pre-university studies through modules in core chemistry. In the second year, you will the further develop the knowledge and understanding gained, with theoretical and practical modules. You can specialise in an area of your choice, including medicinal chemistry and molecular biology. In the third year, you will have the opportunity to work on a 90-credit research project with a major chemical company, where you will be a salaried employee. In the fourth year, you will work on an in-depth research project on a topic of your choice.
