About the course

This course integrates crop and animal production with business management and marketing, adopting an applied approach at the University of Nottingham. Students develop expertise in agricultural science, practical skills, and business strategies to address global challenges, such as sustainably feeding a growing population. Teaching occurs at Sutton Bonington Campus, featuring the University Farm and Dairy Centre, where commercially operated facilities support hands-on learning in animal handling, plant science, and industry-linked activities. Instruction from subject specialists and researchers ensures exposure to cutting-edge developments, enhanced by field courses, placements, and visits to external farms.Key topics include animal health, nutrition, disease management, livestock reproduction, plant physiology, pest control, economics, policy, and rural business. In the first year, students explore sustainable farming systems through farm visits and foundational modules in animal biology and ecosystems. The second year focuses on applied animal science, plant physiology, and agri-marketing, with options like the Enterprise Management Challenge. Final-year opportunities include an Agronomy Field Course and a research project at a leading agricultural centre, alongside choices for industry placements, study abroad, or a computer science year.

What you will learn

In your first year you'll study sustainable systems used by commercial UK farms. By visiting the University Farm and other local farms, you'll be able to see what you’ve learnt in practice. You will also be introduced to key concepts in animal biology, natural and managed ecosystems and plant science. Our Essential Study Skills module will help enhance your transition to university, guiding you through what to expect and how to study. Core second year modules cover applied animal science, plant physiology and agri-marketing. You can choose to take our Enterprise Management Challenge. You work in teams on either a crop or livestock enterprise. You make all the agricultural science and business decisions. You'll observe the impact of your decisions as these are implemented on the farm. In your final year, you can choose a five-day Agronomy Field Course. Through field visits, you'll observe and critically appraise the efficiency of current production strategies. Your final year research project gives you chance to work at one of the country's top agricultural research centres.
