The Bachelor of Fine Arts in Visual Art is a four-year program comprising 120 credit hours. The initial year focuses on foundational coursework to build students' creative and technical skills.Following this, students choose five introductory courses from seven studio areas: Ceramics, Expanded Media, Metalsmithing/Jewelry, Painting/Drawing, Printmaking, Sculpture, and Textiles/Fibers. This exploration helps students identify their advanced study focus while reinforcing core artmaking concepts and introducing new techniques. Required components include 15 credit hours of Art History, an additional drawing course beyond foundations, and the Professional Activities Seminar. The remaining studio credits offer flexibility for in-depth specialization or interdisciplinary work, culminating in 10 credit hours of capstone courses—Directed Study I and II—taken during the senior year to develop a cohesive portfolio. All students must also complete the KU Core, as mandated since Fall 2013. For details, consult the B.F.A. in Visual Art Degree Checklist and an academic advisor.
