About the course

The Department of Slavic Languages and Literatures offers three undergraduate BA concentrations: Polish Studies, Russian language, literature, and culture, or South Slavic (Bosnian-Croatian-Serbian) Studies.Polish instruction at the University of Kansas spans over 30 years, with annual courses from elementary to advanced levels and independent study options. Study abroad is recommended. Professor Svetlana Vassileva-Karagyozova directs the program, teaching advanced Polish and West Slavic literature, culture, and cinema; her research covers 21st-century Polish prose, post-1989 Bildungsroman, communism, memory, and trauma. Russian has been taught since 1943, offering up to five years of language training (Russ 100–600) plus English-taught courses in literature, culture, film, and linguistics; study abroad is encouraged post-Russ 504. Bosnian/Croatian/Serbian (BCS) provides proficiency in three mutually intelligible languages spoken by 20 million people. KU is the only U.S. institution between the West Coast and Mississippi offering full BCS instruction, including a unique North American summer program in Zadar, Croatia.
