About the course

A finance degree from KU will prepare you to work in a variety of fields, including corporate finance, investment banking, commercial banking, asset management, real estate and personal financial planning.  Your general business education, as well as your specific training in finance, will prepare you for competitive jobs.  As a business student, you can further market yourself by declaring a concentration along with your major.The finance major totals 120 undergraduate hours.  You will be required to take general education classes, which meet the requirements of the KU Core, and additional courses including MATH 115, PSYC 104 and a natural science with lab.  You will also take 20 credit-hours in foundation business classes and 18 credit-hours of core business classes.  For the finance major, you will take 18 hours of finance classes including FIN 410, FIN 415 and 12 credit-hours of finance classes above 400.  Additionally, you will have to take an accounting class (321 or 410).  Your career in the Business School will culminate in a capstone course for all business majors, Business Policy & Strategy (MGMT 498), where you will apply the skills you acquire in the Business School toward cases and projects.As a KU business student, you will be required to complete an International Dimension Requirement (IDR).  You can meet this by taking foreign language classes or proving equivalent proficiency through the fourth level (intermediate II).  You can also fulfill this requirement by completing six credit-hours through any approved study abroad program or through classes in contemporary regional/international studies or international business.The finance program at KU builds a strong foundation for a variety of business careers.  By majoring in finance, you will set yourself up for an extensive, well-rounded education while having the option to narrow your focus into a concentration.  It is important in many financial fields that your GPA be as strong as possible.  Additionally, apply for the KU Finance Scholars Program.  Your education and involvement within the finance program will provide you with diverse but balanced skills perfect for many opportunities.
