About the course

The Japanese Language and Literature program requires 31 junior/senior credit hours, with at least 9 hours completed at KU. Requirements were last updated in September 2013, so students should consult their EALC advisor for the most current enrollment details.Core courses include JPN 306-310 (4 credits), JPN 504-508 (6 credits), JPN 562 (3 credits), and options such as JPN 564, JPN 569, or related linguistics/pedagogy (3 credits), along with ECIV 304 or 305 (3 credits). Students must also take premodern and modern Japanese literature in translation (each 3 credits), ensuring these are taught by an EALC faculty member or approved for study abroad. Additional requirements cover premodern and modern Japan (or East Asia) courses (each 3 credits). Honors 499 may substitute for the literature requirements.
