About the course

Our History and English degree is designed for those passionate about literature and history, integrating studies of modern British, European, and world history with English literature from past to present. Students will delve into 500 years of historical ideas, events, and literary creativity across Britain, Europe, and beyond, with optional modules covering specialised topics such as gender and environmental histories, violence and war, American fiction, international bestsellers, and Shakespeare. The programme is based at the historic Old Royal Naval College, a World Heritage Site near central London, providing convenient access to theatres, art galleries, and museums. It emphasises the intersections of history and literature where East and West converge, offering a broad range of historical topics from the 17th to 21st centuries, alongside a focus on literature from the last two centuries, including fiction, poetry, visual arts, film, and theatre. Opportunities for work placements in creative, cultural, public, or heritage sectors enhance career prospects, while assessments vary by module and may include practical assignments.
