Materials Chemistry focuses on the application of chemical principles in fields such as nanotechnology, electronics, polymers, and energy storage. It involves translating fundamental chemical knowledge into practical innovations. Students will acquire essential skills through hands-on experiences, lectures by leading researchers, and advanced analytical techniques, preparing them to develop future materials. Teaching is delivered by experts whose work impacts areas like functional nanomaterials, chemical photonics, energy conversion, solar cells, polymer materials, and catalysis. The program can be pursued as an MSci degree, including an optional work placement year in the UK or abroad between the third and final years. Core modules span foundational to advanced topics, including Chemistry 1 and 2 in early years, Inorganic, Organic, and Physical Chemistry 3, and specialized Year 4 and 5 courses such as Materials Chemistry Project and Nanostructure Materials.
Year 1 core courses: • Chemistry 1 Year 2 core courses: • Chemistry 2X • Chemistry 2Y Year 3 core courses: • Inorganic Chemistry 3 • Organic Chemistry 3 • Physical Chemistry 3 • Frontiers of Chemistry 3M Year 4 core courses: • Materials Chemistry Work Placement Year 5 core courses: • Materials Chemistry Project 4M • Chemistry Problems 4M (A) • Chemistry Special Topics 4M (A) • Functional Materials 4M • Inorganic Chemistry 4M (C) • Materials Characterisation 4M • Nanostructure Materials 4M • Physical Chemistry 4M (A)
