About the course

History and Geography at the University of Exeter’s Penryn Campus is a unique, integrated degree programme that genuinely combines the research expertise of staff in both disciplines. This programme is committed to using both historical practice and analysis with methodologies and insights drawn from Geography in order to gain multiple perspectives on contemporary problems and to explore the many ways in which an understanding of historical and geographical contexts and approaches – and the relationship between them – can help us understand our world. The initial core element grounds students in the multiplicity of analytical perspectives via two complementary foundations modules – ‘Approaches to Geographical Knowledge’ and ‘New Approaches to History’, as well as acknowledging the situated nature of the campus in ‘The Geography of Cornwall’ and providing a research and writing toolkit module delivered by History but applicable to both disciplines. In year two, students take a substantial source study project, and the degree also includes an interdisciplinary dissertation to be taken in year three. A wide range of option modules are available across both disciplines, with a shared focus on environmental issues and contemporary global challenges. The programme offers an excellent Honours-level education in History and Geography that explores the interface between the disciplines. It introduces students to a wide range of historical and geographical, temporal and spatial problems and the main analytical, critical and methodological approaches of the two disciplines. It produces graduates who can engage imaginatively in the process of understanding and analysing complex, sophisticated problems in historical and geographical contexts. It develops students' independent critical thinking, judgement and applied skills.
