English and History, BA (Hons)

In our combined honours programme, students pursue two complementary subjects: English and History. The English component surveys Anglophone literatures from the Middle Ages to the 21st century in historical context, analysing the emergence of forms like the novel. Modules span plays, novels, poetry, short stories, comics/graphic novels, film, television, and digital culture, drawing on writers from Britain, Ireland, the US, Africa, Asia, and beyond. Expertise enables study in Creative Writing (poetry, prose, screenplays), Creative Industries (publishing, museum studies, theatre, film), and Critical Theory, fostering a diverse, enriching experience.The University of Exeter's History programme equips students with foundational skills in year one, advancing to independent research in year two and specialised study in year three. Extensive modules cover global periods from the Roman Empire to the early 21st century, including migration, indigenous peoples in Latin America, health politics, women in society, Vikings, early modern witchcraft, and material culture, delivering an immersive, personalised education.
