About the course

Classical Studies offers you access to the culture and thought of the ancient world, through studying important literature and artefacts. Many of the texts are taught in translation, but you’ll also learn one of the classical languages in detail for two years (or three if you wish). The programme combines the traditional, rigorous attention to the nuances and subtleties of language, with some of the most exciting, innovative approaches to the ancient world. You will benefit from approaching the subject from a variety of angles, from literary, literary-critical, philosophical, cultural-historical and art-historical perspectives. You will also be encouraged to investigate the many intellectual and political ways in which the Classical world is connected to the modern world we live in today.During your first and second year, you will study Greek and Roman literature, history and culture from translated texts. The core modules you will take are Greek and Roman Narrative and Greek and Roman Drama, running in alternate years. You’ll also study either Greek or Latin for two years and you can choose to continue this language study in your third year. A ‘fast-track’ module is available in Greek. In your final year, you will study a central period in the literary and political history of Greece or Rome and choose three options, one of which may be a Dissertation.
